REVIEW: Giant-Size Incredible Hulk - 1

Well now here's a nice surprise! Marvel has been releasing quite a few decent 'bumper issues' of late, the last one of which that came my way was the brilliant Hulk vs Hercules.

Happily, Giant-Size Incredible Hulk builds on this good foundation in being another great value for money book, but goes a little further than others...

***SPOILER ALERT***

The main story ('A Mighty Raging Fury!') written by Roger Stern and pencilled by Zach Howard / Cory Hamscher is a fascinating re-telling of some key moments in the history of the Hulk, narrated by Fred Sloan, whose life was once touched by the green machine.

Fred's quest for interviews (as part of his book) is surprisingly interesting, managing to throw a few rays of new light over past storylines, making the reader take pause for a few moments to think through the comic in front of them.

As you might expect, Fred eventually crosses paths with the Hulk, leading to a question over whether we'll be seeing more of him in the future (especially as Rick appears to have gone a bit 'A-Bomb')...

The backup story is the interesting classic 'The Evil That Is Cast...' originally printed in Hulk annual 7, containing an early appearance of Master Mold, battling Angel, Iceman, and of course - the Hulk. John Byrne & Roger Stern lent their considerable talents to the story, and for the most part, it stands up well to today's work - although the artwork does show perhaps a little too much of its period (70s).

Pete's Score: 4 out of 5
(great value for money, and a nice 'jumping on' comic for anyone unfamiliar with the Hulk - recommended)
